Gastrointestinal bleeding in infants and cow’s milk

Fifty-percent of a group of infants studied for iron-deficiency anemia demonstrated gastrointestinal bleeding due to the ingestion of whole cow’s milk. These babies showed an abnormal decrease in the amount of protein and copper in the blood. Their fecal blood loss was 1.7 ml per day, compared to 3.1 ml per day on a soya milk substitute.
