A study from the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine revealed that family-based treatment produced long-term benefits in weight reduction of children. Children in a group who were taught new eating and exercise patterns, and behavioral skills were lighter in weight than a control group after ten years of follow-up. The treatment program involved a low-fat diet and a regular exercise program. (Journal of the American Medical Association 264(19)2519-2523, November 21, 1990)
