Reflex sympathetic dystrophy and vitamin C

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy which presents as discoloration, burning pain, swelling and stiffness, often appears after trauma or surgery. The cause is not clearly understood; for the most part treatment is minimally helpful.

A recent study of 127 wrist fractures revealed that only seven percent of those given 500 mg of vitamin C per day developed reflex sympathetic dystrophy, while 22 percent of the control group did over the course of one year of follow-up. (The Lancet 354(9195)2025-2028, December 11, 1999)
