Eucalyptus oil for dust mites

House dust mites are known to contribute to allergies and sometimes asthma. Mites are known to accumulate in bedding. Washing the bedding in very hot water eliminates about 95 percent of the mites. Researchers from Australia tested the use of eucalyptus oil in wash water with the use of lukewarm wash water. They poured 100 mL of eucalyptus oil in 25 mL of liquid detergent. The blankets were pre-soaked for 30 to 60 minutes, then washed using lukewarm water. The 0.2 percent solution of eucalyptus oil killed 97 percent of the dust mites on the blankets.
