Massage, infants

Massage may be more soothing to distressed newborn infants than rocking, according to a report from the University of Miami School of Medicine and Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina.
Newborn infants of depressed adolescent mothers who were massaged slept better, appeared more mentally alert, gained more weight, and had lower stress hormone levels than did non-massaged infants.
The researchers report that lack of human touch causes a temporary shutdown of infant growth hormones. (Infant Behavior and Development 19:107-112, 1996)
