Baby walkers, injuries

The Ontario (Canada) Medical Association has called for a ban on the sale of baby walkers due to the high incidence of injuries associated with their use. A one-year study in one hospital revealed 139 injuries, including 29 broken bones. It has been estimated that in 1980 23,900 baby walker associated injuries occurred in the United States. The authors of this study conclude that baby walkers are a cause of significant injury rates in babies. (Pediatrics 78(3)488-493, September, 1986) Copyright 1986 Phylis Austin
